Abstract: Fundamental requirements are set out for services that provide 'medical and other healthcare services using telecommunications technologies and any other electronic communications between patients, practitioners and healthcare providers'. The requirements relate to administration (from organisational and health professional perspectives); and the following of clinical and technical guidelines (including those that relate to devices and equipment connectivity). The need for procedures relating to information for and education of patients; and for protocols around confidentiality, data management, coordination of care with other professionals, technical failures, etc. are affirmed.
Relevance to Active and Healthy Ageing: Medium
Older Person Specific : No
Usage: Not known
Comment: The guidelines are extremely pertinent to the patient context for telehealth services. Importantly, as well as putting in place necessary safeguards around (e.g.) the technologies and administrative procedures; patient rights and choices are recognised. Specific attention is given to the bandwidth, etc. that is necessary for effective real-time video consultations.
